We’ve all used Apricot Scrub at one point or another, right? I’ve been a faithful user for many years. That is until I started reading the ingredient labels on my skin care products. The gentle version for sensitive skin that you can purchase at nearly every grocery or pharmacy claims to contain 95% naturally derived ingredients. But the other 5%? Harsh Sulfates, drying alcohols, and even irritating perfumes and dyes. These ingredients can all spell disaster for someone with reactive skin like me.
I wasn’t quite ready to give up my flaky skin fix right before the dry winter season sets in. So I wanted to rework my own recipe for a 100% natural option I could make at home. Enter my All Natural Apricot Face Scrub. No reason to use 20+ ingredients, just (affiliate links) Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil and organic untreated finely crushed apricot seed. Let’s get started!
Start first by measuring out your coconut oil, approximately 2 parts of the final amount you want. We all store things in different size packages, so giving you a ratio rather than an exact measurement seems smarter for this project. Melt your coconut oil in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Then add 1 part crushed apricot seed and stir well.
After melting, the coconut oil will be in a liquid state. It will need to be stirred again every five minutes or so to avoid complete separation. Just keep stirring until it is almost solidified, then pour it into your storage container of choice.
Easy peasy, right? To use, splash your face with some water and dip out about 1 teaspoon to gently rub on your face. Rinse off with warm water and cover your face with a steamy washcloth for about 30 seconds. The mini steam allows your pores to soak up that nourishing and anti-bacterial coconut oil. Follow with your usual cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Don’t scrub too roughly and don’t use more often than once a week. I bought the 1 pound bag of apricot shell for around $8.00 and barely used 1/8th of the bag for a huge tub of scrub. Definitely a value save on top of the all natural healthier option. Does that make you want to give it a try? Have you used the store-bought version? Let me know in the comments below!

I love apricot scrubs. How long will this last? Did you keep it in the fridge? Just wondering. Pinned btw & hope to make it soon.

No I am just keeping it in the shower for now since I use it frequently on my feet too. I don’t think it would last indefinitely, but I would give it an expiration date along with whatever is on the coconut oil.

I just ran out of my store bought apricot scrub yesterday!! Today I was going to buy some more, but now that I’ve read your post I’m really considering making my own. I’m really trying to be more natural & DIY anyway. P.S. It was so great meeting you last weekend at Bloggy Bootcamp. You are officially my favorite red headed blogger :)

Hey, THAT just made my day! You want to try my scrub AND I’m your fav redhead? Like WHOA! Thank you!

I love all your DIY skincare recipes! Keep them coming! I’m excited to try this one. The oil cleanser that I make requires me to use a warm, wet washcloth to remove it, so I get some gentle exfoliation every night. Occasionally I need a little bit more exfoliation, so this recipe would be perfect to use maybe once a week! :)

Thanks Jana! It is perfect for that! I do a similar cleansing regimen in the winter time. That is usually when I start using the apricot scrub more frequently from once a month to once a week. I just couldn’t stand the thought of continuing to buy something more expensive than I could make it and containing irritating chemicals.

OH MAN. This looks so good, I want to eat it. I am being serious. It looks like something I could smear over toast while also applying to my face. Where did you get the apricot seed? Is that a common product that is carried at a health food store? It’s just something I’ve never looked for. I think I am going to try this out. (And maybe a sample bite, too).

This would not be very tasty but you should definitely put it on your face. There should be a link in the post to where you can buy it online. I have never seen apricot shell like this in a health food store, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there.

Thanks Anna! I’m still obsessing over that pink lipstick you were wearing and whether or not a redhead could get away with it. You’ll love this scrub!

Right? I’ve seriously been using it for over a decade and it’s so much cheaper to make it this way. Plus the coconut oil! My face feels Ah-mazing after using it. By the way, Trader Joe’s is a GREAT place to pick up your coconut oil! Ya’ll go check out Lauren’s post on it!

I love using apricot scrub, but it’s crazy how much junk is in the store-bought version. This looks great–so simple to use, and since I already have coconut oil at home just need to buy the apricot seed. Thanks for sharing!
